RAMSR (Rhythm and Movement for Self-Regulation) is a program for 3-8yr olds that aims to support attentional and emotional regulation skills, as well as mental flexibility, inhibition, and working memory (executive functions).
The program was first designed and piloted in 2016 by Associate Professor Kate Williams (Queensland University of Technology) and her music therapy and early childhood education colleagues.

RAMSR Training
Rhythm and movement can help young children manage self-regulation of their emotions, attention and behaviour. Approximately 30% of young children have problems with self-regulation, which can affect learning, transition to school and long term wellbeing. Educators, teachers, allied health professionals and anyone working with young children can learn how to use rhythm and movement activities to positively support the development of self-regulation and address underlying brain connections.
The RAMSR Module is an online and self-paced course with the flexibility to complete the course in your own time (within a 12 month time frame). The course is moderated by RAMSR team members throughout the 12 months access.
Musical background, skills or prior musical training is not required
This course is international time-zone friendly.

Welcome to the RAMSR-O online course. This course provides you with all the skills and resources necessary to run the RAMSR-O (Original) program for 3-8 year olds in your early childhood setting.
This section provides a brief overview of the online course and allows you to prepare for your learning. You will be introduced to the team who created RAMSR-O and RAMSR-T (Toddler) at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.
RAMSR founder, Kate Williams introduces RAMSR with a hypothetical story of two children. She will then lead you through a typical RAMSR session so you can experience it as the child. This is followed up by some introductory information about the program and a chance to share information about yourself and the self regulation challenges in your setting.
Delve into the development of self regulation including the executive functions which contribute to overall regulation ability.
In this section you will learn about some of the evidence and theories that inform the RAMSR program including beat synchronisation, entrainment, auditory cueing and the 'musician advantage'.
In this section you will learn the structure of the program, how it has been implemented in the research today and how it might look in your setting. We also share the results of our 2016 pilot study and our large randomised control trial in 2020.
RAMSR is purposefully designed as a low cost and low resource program. Here we outline all of the resources needed. We also take a look and practice the RAMSR-O Session Plan 1!
Time to learn about the Target Skills. These are the bones of RAMSR and will help you to understand each task and perhaps even create your own activities to target a particular skill in future. In this section we also run you through Plan 2.
This stage provides some information to help you make the most of the RAMSR program and tailor it to the needs of your children. Plan 3 builds upon several of the activities in Plan 2 as we get in to the second half of the program.
In the final stage we provide you with some information that will help you to support all children in an inclusive learning environment. Learn and practice Plan 4 and look towards implementing in your own setting. For the Australian audience, we provide you with some information about how RAMSR-O aligns with the Early Years Learning Framework (Australia's national early childhood curriculum), the Australian National Curriculum (ANC) and Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs).
We also discuss how you can stay in contact with us in future and join a RAMSR community of practice.
